I wasn’t sure what to think when I went into this film – it was a random pick from the free films streaming on Roku.
If you like films where the lead character is pretty unlikeable and nothing really happens, the this is the film for you!
Kate (Alexandra Swarens who also writes, directs and produces) is on a layover in Paris on her way to her sister’s wedding, she leaves a voicemail for her mum and signs off sharply – no “love you” or any kind of warmth which is a big red flag to me.
She also hates her sister’s husband-to-be and yet is flying all the way from the US to Italy to be a bridesmaid at her wedding. I am not sure how most family dynamics work but if I hated my brother-in-law to be that much I’d come up with an illness or visa issue and just stay at home instead of ruining my sister’s happy day by moping in all of the family photos.
Anyway, on to the plot!
Kate checks in to a hotel in the centre of Paris (she is in Advertising so must have a few bob to spare) and can’t sleep so heads out to a local bar where she meets Juliette (Clementine Pinet).
They pair begin what the film wants to appear to be a fast-paced affair but as the pair spend 3 (ish?) days with each other doing nothing but talking about literally nothing it’s more slight breeze than whirlwind romance.
While the chemistry between the characters is undeniable, the lack of substance to the script really let down what had the makings to be quite a pleasant modern (lesbian) romance.
While the conversations and tone are natural and lend themselves to the two characters exploring each other’s personalities, I got so bored that at points I fast-forwarded through the 10+ minute long scenes of chatting about nothing (books, places, food – literally nothing of note) and I did not miss any plot points (as there were none) or any character development (because there is none).
I can’t really recommend it, which is a shame as it has the potential to go somewhere, it just didn’t seem to have the skill or the guts behind it to push it where it needed to go to make it interesting.
Watch this film if you like a slow-boil romance that doesn’t really have a payoff or if chatting about nothing much is your kink.
Note: This review is a Quick Review – where I quickly review a film instead of doing my usual deep dives. If you like this format let me know! I am considering doing more “Quick Reviews” on shorter films or shows which don’t warrant going as in depth as my other content.
